October 31, 2008, Newsletter Issue #214: The Info in Get Info

Tip of the Week

"Get Info" will tell you a lot about a file. To use it, click on the fileŽs icon, and type command-i, or select ŽGet Info" from the File menu.

The box which appears will list (depending on your OS) the kind of file, the file size, and the path to its location. It will tell you the date and time the file was created, and the most recent date and time of any changes to it.

The "Comments" box can show almost anything ... if it is a file you downloaded from the net, often it will show the URL of the file online, or it may be the return address of the person who sent you a file by e-mail. You can also type your own comments into this box.

At the bottom of the Get Info window are two check boxes. A "locked" file cannot be changed or deleted easily. A "stationery pad" file is a template ... when you open it, youŽll get a copy of the file (your letterhead, or whatever youŽve created), and the original will remain intact.

Moving back to the top of the box, youŽll see that "General Information" is part of a drop-down menu. If the file youŽre examining is an application or drive, the menu will include information on Sharing (if you have file sharing turned on). For applications only, you will also find Memory. If you wish to increase the amount of memory assigned to the application, this is the place to do so.
