Why did my system crash after I installed a new program?

Usually the installer will remind you, but whether it does or not, be sure to remember to disable your virus-protection software before doing an install.

Leaving it on can cause your installer to crash, or even worse, result in an apparently good install which will later turn out to be incomplete or corrupted.
